Hint: The Bible verse

*clarification*  while i do enjoy a good debate on religion, i was specifically commenting on this particular church, and how their statement is Non Sequiter based on the bible verse listed

Exodus 20:3 (this is the king james version since i seem to have lost my catholic bible)

Thou Shalt Have No Other Gods Before Me

you see, the thing is, Islam, Like Christianity, and Judaism all have the same god, they use many of the same religious texts, and their belief systems are remarkably similar.  A Muslim therefor does not violate that tenant.  this is why i have a problem with organized religion. ( and no, this is NOT an isolated incident, i see this shit here in my own backyard as it were)

i promise i will go back to being mr. nice guy for my next post

i'd have to say yes. i wont begrudge people their right to belive in a deity, but i think religion should be abolished like slavery was.

Just curious, but how come you make the claim that religion should be abolished? That's a pretty sweeping generalization. "religion" isn't a living or breathing entity, it's a concept. X religious church is an institution (like slavery is an institution - I'm only making the claim between similarity - they are both institutions), but religion is not. Like I said, just curious...

I know this wasn't YOUR comment, but I have to address it somewhere. Just because something is old does not mean that it's out of date, i.e. religion.

Yeah, my comment was kinda vague, but that is because I wanted it not to be taken as an attack against Christians (though the picture would seem to indicate that) specifically I wanted this post to show the absurdity of any dogmatic organization, Christian or otherwise.

I accept that people believe in God, or whatever else they believe in, and I can even understand their reasons for doing so, but I believe that the institutions that dictate faith and try to structure thought, should not be allowed to exist. This is not out of some Marxist "opiate of the masses" snarkiness either, I really feel that spiritual/theistic belief should and mostly have progressed beyond the rigid structures of any church.

I should also point out that i am not exactly an atheist, and while I don't believe in Christ or God in any traditional sense of the words, it is not my wish to prevent other people from believing in it. in fact, what i would like to see are non denominational churches that are truly open to any one of all faiths and beliefs. a place that holds no political affiliations that people can go to discuss and debate their views on god etc.

there are progressive churches our there I know, and I am even ordained as a minister through the Universal Life Church, but, for the most part, religions are segregationist, intolerant and ignorant and it is my finding that they generally promote these same qualities in their members.

Yes, that's why I always right X religion, or X whatever as well. I think you sparked some interesting debate though, and personally I did not find it offensive. I suppose instead of "abolish religion"... perhaps "phase out organized religion"?

I hate how everyone always goes back to Marx... EVERY single class Marx is brought up at least once *sigh*

"I really feel that spiritual/theistic belief should and mostly have progressed beyond the rigid structures of any church. " I agree! I'm spiritual etc (and for the record Catholic - though I'm not a good Catholic by any stretch, and don't believe in a lot of their ideas), but I do my "spiritual/belief-oriented things" on my own terms outside of the church (the physical structure).

"what i would like to see are non denominational churches that are truly open to any one of all faiths and beliefs. a place that holds no political affiliations that people can go to discuss and debate their views on god etc." DITTO! Or even if specific sets or denominations would be more tolerant or open-minded in general.

aw tanx. Just tryin to help!

hehehe I liked your partial-pun.

My fiancee did up a really cool decal for his truck (I need to take a picture of it).. it's a monster angler fish with an open mouth about to eat a Jesus fish. It's because we see drivers with Jesus fish all the time, that wind up cutting us off or giving us the finger. Real Christian....

and now to actually address the content of the JOURNAL lol... Thanks for the hint, I needed it. My opinion on the sign... like Ruby...  lol

And I definitely didn't take your journal to be against Christianity at all. It's hard to make a more controversial statement, without it automatically reflecting on the "default" religion. Not to worry. <3

yeah i saw that and it made me mad, because it is essentially not a religious statement at all but a thinly veiled racist one.

There are so many things wrong with that it makes my head hurt

Religion would be great if there weren't stupid people around to distort and ruin everything.
