Several games stand out in my mind whenever I think of classic videogame themes, and the Minibosses resurrected all those feelings that I experienced when I powered up that big grey block. The Minibosses have captured that nostalgia and churned it out into pseudo-punk style rock medleys, transforming 8-bit sounds into basic chords and baselines. Their love of video games is quite apparent in their painstaking covers, composed entirely without the aid of sheet music.

The Minibosses have captured that nostalgia and churned it out into pseudo-punk style rock medleys, transforming 8-bit sounds into basic chords and baselines.
I first happened upon the Minibosses in 2003 when I started my forays online to discover new music. I was searching to see if there were places I could find Nintendo music, as I had come across the Final Fantasy sound track some years before. During these searches, I saw several articles about this group called the Minibosses, and decided to follow up, and am ever so glad I did. They had a few mp3s of their songs for people to listen to and I happened to see one titled Mega Man 2. I was immediately and surprisingly impressed; I hadn’t thought it would be possible to translate video games songs into a rock medley, but there it was. I was instantly in love.

Listening to the medley, I reminisced on my hours upon hours of blistering my fingers on a hard plastic rectangle while I guided the Blue Bomber against the forces of the nefarious Doctor Wiley. Music that I knew so well suddenly had new emotional impact as the beginning and boss themes became more epic, eerie or energetic. I eagerly downloaded the other songs they had to add to my burgeoning library.

Some of my other favorites that they have done are the themes for Ninja Gaiden, which is harsh, fast and makes you want to kick the shit out of evil ninja
Some of my other favorites that they have done are the themes for Ninja Gaiden, which is harsh, fast and makes you want to kick the shit out of evil ninja; the haunting, heavy bass of the Metroid medley, which begins with the theme from Kraid’s lair, one of the best pieces of video game music ever created as far as I am concerned; and of course the achingly beautiful Legend of Zelda theme song done on guitar and bass.

The band has recently updated their minimalist site with the entire track list for their LP album Brass now available for download (for FREE!), as well as some videos and wallpapers. The Minibosses have reminded me that my love for videogames (an I do love them) is not abnormal or made me realize that even if it was I would not give a damn, and continue to revel in the 8 bit glory of those bygone days. I miss those days…

I probably shouldn’t have to say this, but I shall anyway. If you have ever loved or even moderately enjoyed the heyday of 8-bits worth of gaming goodness, go to the Minibosses site, download their songs, tell your friends, buy their CDs, go to their shows and for the love of Mario, tell your friends! I promise you that you will not regret it.
