Death By Sexy is the latest release from Eagles of Death Metal. The group consisting of Queens of the Stone Age front man Josh Homme and Jesse “The Devil” Hughes, first announced the release of a second album after gaining critical acclaim and a large fan base after the release of their first album, Peace Love Death Metal. This album doesn’t stretch far in sound when compared to the first release. In fact, right from the album’s first track, the listener should be able to discern if they will love or hate this album. The guitar riffs are simple and catchy and The Devil is still showing his influences without shame as well as his personal view of sexiness through his lyrics. Many of his songs talk about sexual attraction, but in simple terms. On “Cherry Cola,” EofDM shows their pop qualities as well as their connection to other desert rock bands.
The drums are a little more complex than they were on the first album, granted it was also Homme’s first time behind the kit. They are still simple beats however, and Homme helps provide back-up vocals throughout the album. The guitar solos are much more sharper and show that Hughes as begun to hone his craft. The group still retains much of it’s blues influence in their songs and is contagiously happy. This album could get any party going, and though it feels sloppy in parts here and there, the element of sex mixed with rock-n-roll is always apparent.
If you enjoyed the first release by EofDM, you are sure to enjoy this one. Josh Homme may be use to the fame by now, and sooner than later The Devil will too. This is a typical side project to hear coming from the QOTSA clan and is not quite as experimental in sound as other side projects such as the Desert Sessions. Death By Sexy will get any crowd dancing, drinking and perhaps moving into debauchery by the end of the night.
