Twins separated at birth have married each other without realizing they were brother and sister, it has been revealed.

The British couple's marriage has now been annulled by the High Court after judges ruled the marriage had never validly existed.

The identities of the brother and sister and details of how they fell in love and married are being kept secret. Soon after they were born they were separated and adopted by different families.

Neither was told they had a twin and had no idea they were blood relatives until after their wedding.

The British couple were granted an annulment at a special hearing at the High Court in London, Professor Lord Alton told The Times. Judges in the Family Division ruled that the marriage had never validly existed.

Lord Alton, who was told about the case by a High Court judge, said that the twins’ experience demonstrated the need to strengthen the rights of children to know the identity of their biological parents. The peer declined to name the judge or identify the case more specifically.

He argued that reforms that are currently being debated in the House of Lords threaten to undermine even existing rights.

“The right for children to know the identity of their biological parents is a human right," said Lord Alton. “There will be more cases like this if children are not given access to the truth. The needs of the child must always be paramount”.

Um. WOW.

That really is kind of sad. It's hard enough to find someone in this world you like and get along with well enough to want to spend your life with. And then only to find out that person is the one person in the world you should not marry? I kinda feel sorry for the both of them.

I'd like to know more details, which I wonder might/might not come out.. like when did they maybe wonder that they might have been related? did they sense something and that initial connection they mistook for love (in a lets get married sense rather than a family love) and how the events unfold.

I cant imagine how traumatic that might be to go through. And how you might feel about having had sex with your sibling unknowingly, and having to relive all that when your family and friends want to know why your marriage got annulled...

This is scary to read because this could actually happen to me. My mom has 4 kids; I'm the oldest, then there are 2 kids she had after me with adifferent father who both got adopted out, then there is my little brother who she still has who is the youngest. It's a long story that I won't go into, but she does know that the other two kids live in either OH or WV; one got adopted by a family that my grandma knew, they live in WV somewhere, and the other lives in Columbus.

Scary. I might have met them and not even known. One was born while my mom was in prison so he was taken at birth, his name might or might not have been changed. The other didn't get put up for adoption until he was a year or so, so I doubt they woulda changed his name

Actually, it's puritanical nonsense that would keep them from getting married, and they can certainly have kids. There is testing for the recessive genes that are an issue when family members breed with each other. In reality, it is more likely for a woman that is over 36 and pregnant to give birth to a child with some type of birth issue than it is for a sibling couple.

No reason to let societal misinformation stand in the way of love.

I used to be grossed out by the idea of incest but then realized the only reason I was grossed out by it was because that is what society tells us. I'm certainly not going to go sleep with any of my relatives but if two people love each other then who really cares if they are related or not.

I would be absolutely devastated. Can you imagine finding your soulmate? Your life partner? You think you have everything planned out. And then... this.

I can't even imagine what they are going through. The feelings of shame, guilt, confusion. Ugh. Worst feeling ever.

We're all obviously living in a David Lynch film. Where's my blue box with a blue key?

But anyway, nobody mentioned the elephant in the room--the one sitting next to Naomi Watts. Obviously, the only way the couple discovered their mutual heritage was by the wife getting pregnant and the newborn has severe medical complications, which prompted doctors to run genetic tests.
