Favorite of all time is
"Hard to Handle" by The Black Crowes, originally written by Otis Redding.

I also like:

"Redemption Song" covered by Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash

"Down With The Sickness" covered by Richard Cheese

"Across The Universe" covered by Fiona Apple

"Viva Las Vegas" covered by The Dead Kennedys

"All Along The Watchtower" covered by Jimi Hendrix

"My Way" covered by Sid Vicious

"Turn Turn Turn"by The Byrds
*ORIGINAL ARTIST: God*
yep thats right guys, GOD write that one! HAHA

Cake's cover of Gloria Gaynor - "I Will Survive"
also... Royksopp does a cover of "Go with the Flow" by Queens of the Stone Age. it is very similar to the original but i love it.

Wow! Some really good choices. To this I add:

Black Flag - Louie, Louie (Kingsmen)
Pixies - Head On (Jesus & Mary Chain)
Stiff Little Fingers - Running Bear (Johnny Preston)
Dickies - The Banana Splits Song (TV show theme)
Dickies - Gigantor (Cartoon theme)
Hell, a dozen more covers by the Dickies...
Circle Jerks - Put A Little Love In Your Heart (Jackie DeShannon)
Undertones - Under The Boardwalk (Drifters)
Vandals - Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairies (Tchaikowsky)
Hole - Pale Blue Eyes (Velvet Underground)
Sam Kinnison - Wild Thing (Troggs)
Elvis Costello - Wild Horses (Rolling Stones)
Groovie Ghoulies - 2000 Man (Rolling Stones)
And again, probably a dozen more covers by the Groovie Ghoulies...
Hollywood Brats - Then He Kissed Me (Crystals cover)
45 Grave - Riboflavin (Rigamorticians)
Joan Jett - Crimson & Clover (Tommy James & The Shondells)
Me First & The Gimme Gimmes - Stepping Out (Liza Minelli, I guess)
William Shatner - Rocket Man (Elton John)
Violent Femmes - Eep Opp Ork Ah Ah (Means I Love You) (Jetsons cartoon)
Marilyn Manson - I Put A Spell On You (Screamin' Jay Hawkins)

I'm really digging the recent cover of Joy Division's 'Shadowplay' by the Killers.

Also, Matthew Good did a cover of the Dead Kennedy's 'Moon over Marin' on his latest album. It's so chilled out and mellow, you'd never have known it was a punk rock song. Kudos for the creativity!

I was listening to my iPod on shuffle yesterday and heard The Bruisers' version of Billy Joel's Lunatic and immediately thought of this thread. Such a great cover. I like a lot of covers, but I am pretty damn picky about them. Of course, I'm known by my friends for being ridiculously picky about music in general, so I guess that makes sense.
Detroit Cobras and Manic Hispanic are both masters at the art of the cover song. They both put a new spin on any song they do and they both do almost nothing but covers, so there's a LOT to choose from with both of them.
Now I've got a bunch of cover songs popping into my head, so I'll try to name off a few really good ones...
The Beltones do a GREAT cover of Suzi Is A Heartbreaker, originally by The Newtown Neurotics. They also do a great cover of The Nips' I Don't Want Nobody To Love. I've always been partial to The Avengers' version of Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones. I didn't catch who did it, but in the movie Planet Terror, there's a kind of Lounge style cover of The Dead Kennedys' Too Drunk To Fuck which is hilarious, especially with the female vocals.

Sonota Arctica does great covers of Still Loving You by The Scorpions and Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler.

Blind Guardian does Mr. Sandman and Surfin' U.S.A.

Billy Corgan's Cover of The Number Of The Beast by Iron Maiden as well as Synergy's cover of the same song

Death (Chuck Schuldiner) cover of Painkiller by Judas Priest

The Legendendary Man In Black (Cash) cover of Rusty Cage by Soundgarden

Shotgun Messiah's cover of Babylon by Johnny Thunders/ New York Dolls
