I was listening to my iPod on shuffle yesterday and heard The Bruisers' version of Billy Joel's Lunatic and immediately thought of this thread. Such a great cover. I like a lot of covers, but I am pretty damn picky about them. Of course, I'm known by my friends for being ridiculously picky about music in general, so I guess that makes sense. Detroit Cobras and Manic Hispanic are both masters at the art of the cover song. They both put a new spin on any song they do and they both do almost nothing but covers, so there's a LOT to choose from with both of them. Now I've got a bunch of cover songs popping into my head, so I'll try to name off a few really good ones... The Beltones do a GREAT cover of Suzi Is A Heartbreaker, originally by The Newtown Neurotics. They also do a great cover of The Nips' I Don't Want Nobody To Love. I've always been partial to The Avengers' version of Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones. I didn't catch who did it, but in the movie Planet Terror, there's a kind of Lounge style cover of The Dead Kennedys' Too Drunk To Fuck which is hilarious, especially with the female vocals.
